Temples, Doi Suthep & the Old City

November to February is the cool, dry season and the reason people plan around it — days in the high twenties, evenings that actually cool down. February to April is burning season in the northern valleys, with March usually the worst: agricultural fires and forest fires fill the basin, the mountain views go, and the air in town gets heavy. If you have a respiratory condition, avoid March. The rains, roughly June to October, come mostly in the afternoon and make the waterfalls and the rafting better than at any other time.

No. Chiang Mai sits in a mountain basin in the far north, around 700 kilometres from the nearest coast, and nothing here is a substitute for the sea. What it has instead are rivers, waterfalls you can climb, a national park with the highest summit in the country, and a flooded quarry that is marketed as a water park. If a beach is what you are after, this is the wrong city — Phuket and Krabi are a flight away.

Start by reading the programme rather than the name. “Sanctuary”, “rescue” and “ethical” are not protected terms in Thailand, so they tell you nothing on their own. The programme does: whether there is riding (most camps ab andoned it years ago), whether bathing is included, whether there is direct contact with young animals or a no-touching rule. Minimum ages differ by operator and are stated on the booking page.

It depends on how many days you have. The White, Blue and Black temples are genuinely unlike anything else in Thailand, and the tour is the cheapest way to see all three. But Chiang Rai is 180 kilometres away, three to three and a half hours each way, and the day runs eleven to twelve hours with six or seven of them on the road. Worth it if those temples were a reason you came north; hard to justify if it is your only free day.

Not in the way the photographs suggest. Mass sky-lantern releases have been banned in Chiang Mai since 2015 and inside the old city moat since 2018, after fires damaged buildings — the aviation authority closes the airport for the nights in question as it is. The famous synchronised release is a ticketed event at a venue well outside the city, and it is not cheap. In 2026 Yi Peng and Loy Krathong fall on 24 and 25 November; the floating candles on the river and the decorated temples are free and are the part most locals mean by the festival.

Cooking classes and the popular elephant camps fill one to three days ahead in high season; day trips are usually still available the evening before. Since almost everything cancels free up to 24 hours ahead, booking early costs nothing. A car is not needed for the tours — every one of them includes pickup or a meeting point in town, and inside the moat you walk. A rental only makes sense if you plan to drive the mountain roads yourself, and Thailand drives on the left.
